Mindfulness is the practice of focusing attention on the experience of the current moment, with an attitude of non-judgmental acceptance and curiosity. Although Mindfulness originated from Buddhist practices, here at Collywobbles we teach secular Mindfulness (not associated with any religious practice). Mindfulness is like going to the gym, but for the mind. The nature of the mind is to think, just as the nature of the heart is to beat. Mindfulness practices offer us ways to befriend our minds and learn different methods to cope when difficult emotions come to visit us. Practicing Mindfulness is mental exercise that literally strengthens the brains grey matter. Specifically, the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. These are two key learning areas that support the minds ability to focus, pay attention and reduce worry. The more we practice Mindfulness the stronger the mind becomes. There is much evidence to support the positive impact Mindfulness has on our mental health and wellbeing; attention and memory skills and emotional regulation. In turn, the research tells us that improvements here can lead to reduced stress, anxiety and depression as well as an increase in academic and social skills and higher self esteem. We have developed Mind-craft to be an engaging and creative experience for children to begin their mindfulness practice. There will be lots of arts and craft for the children to make, stories to read and short meditations.
